MARY ELIZABETH WOOTEN
MARY ELIZABETH WOOTEN
Mary Elizabeth Wooten, 88, of Springville, Utah, died May 22, 2014 at Utah Valley Hospital in Provo, Utah after a long life of service and sacrifice.
Mary was born March 9, 1926 in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina to John Henry Wooten and Myrtle Mae Nance. She married John Gurney Brown 15 May 1943 and had three children: Larry Fred, Mary Ann, and Myrtle “Mickey” Mae.
In in the fall of 1950 the family moved to Alaska where John served in the military for two years. In 1953 the family returned to Roanoke Rapids, Mary was diagnosed with tuberculosis and spent 22 months in a sanatorium in Wilson County, North Carolina. The children were in the care of their special grandmother and other relatives. While in the Hospital she met the LDS Missionaries. Soon after her release from the hospital, two missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints came to Mary’s door and she let them in. In the account of her conversion, she wrote “I had not much of a way to go - my marriage gone and three children to raise with no father and I was sick. My mother was not financially or physically able to care for the children or me, so pray very hard I did”. In August 4, 1956 Mary joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints along with her niece. Her mother and the three children were baptised September 1, 1956. She served as a Primary teacher and Relief Society teacher. From the time she became a member of the Church, Mary started collecting information on her ancestors. She spent much of her life doing family history research and temple work. In the account of her conversion, she wrote, “I have never regretted joining the church. It gave the children something and someone to hold on to and a strong foundation to build their lives on-something they could believe in as they really did not have anything where they were”.
In 1959 the family moved to Tampa, Florida where Mary and Warren Osgood Scott were
married. Mary completed her training as an LPN nurse and worked many years and enjoyed serving others and supporting her family.
In 1964 she married William Boston Mathis in Kingsland, Georgia. In 1969 they moved to Utah so she could be closer to her children. She continued to work as a Nurse and enjoyed genealogy, gardening, crocheting, and having lunch with her son, Larry of Kentucky Fried Chicken.
She is survived by her son, Larry Fred Brown (Cheryl) of Payson, Utah and her daughter, Myrtle/Mickey Mae Brown Stokes (Steve) of Springville, Utah. She is also survived by her brothers, John L. Wooten (Virginia) of Texas and Jasper A. Wooten (Helen) of South Carolina; her sister, Helen L. Taylor (Edd) of Florida, sixteen grandchildren, and thirty-seven great grandchildren. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Mary Ann Brown Smith Dickey; her brothers, Lawrence M. Wooten, Harold E. Wooten, Frank L. Wooten, James C. Wooten, and her grandson, Marc Alan Brown.
The family will forever be grateful for the sacrifices she made to offer them a better life.
We would like to give a special thanks to Steve and Mickey and their family for years of caring for Grandma.
Graveside service will be held Tuesday, May 27, 2014, 2:00 pm at the Springville Evergreen Cemetery, 1997 South 400 East.
